ABOUT ‘THE COMPANY OF CRANES’

‘The Company of Cranes‘ is the work of artist Melanie Tomlinson, commissioned by Somerset Art Works (SAW) and The Great Crane Project, funded by Arts Council England.

Since 2010 Somerset Art Works has developed a programme of community engagement projects, inspired by cranes, offering creative opportunities to schools, groups and individuals.  This ongoing partnership with The Great Crane Project has successfully helped raise awareness and support for a fascinating conservation project – the reintroduction of the Eurasian Crane to the Somerset Levels.

This website is part of Melanie Tomlinson’s 2013/14 The Company of Cranes project. Designed for education settings and groups, this website provides activities and resources to nurture
independent study and creative skills, build self-confidence and understanding of conservation and the environment.  The education programme is funded by InspirED Somerset.

You will find activity instructions and templates in the Resources section, then share your work on the Interactive Map.  See what other groups are doing by visiting Recently Shared Work.

The Company of the Cranes project has its own blog where you can follow Melanie Tomlinson’s artistic journey and view her beautiful hand printed pre-cinema objects, including zoetropes, praxinoscopes and finely detailed illustrations that narrate the cranes’ journey from
Brandenburg to Somerset. thecompanyofcranes.blogspot.co.uk
